Zane

Zane was smiling down at his phone when Hunter walked in. “Hey boss, what’s on the other side of that screen that’s got you smiling so big?”

Zane put his phone face down on his desk and refocused his eyes on his colleague. Avoiding the question altogether would be his best option here. “Hi Hunter. Everything going okay with RightfulHome?”

Hunter glanced at the phone and decided to leave well enough alone. “Better than okay. Winnie White is a business savant. She’s efficient, has a quick mind, and has already forecasted things that we didn’t even think to see coming. I can’t remember ever feeling so confident about an investment before.”

Zane did his best to keep his reaction neutral. “That’s fantastic to hear. Well done in discovering them. Is there something you’d like to discuss?” he asked, wondering why Hunter had dropped by.

“Thank you. And yes. A very important matter, actually.”

Zane leaned in.

“The team is going to happy hour tonight. We need you there,” Hunter wagged his eyebrows at Zane.

“Need me, huh?” Zane laughed, intrigued.

“We’re meeting with RightfulHome this evening over at Karaoke Box to officially discuss a fundraiser, and unofficially sing our hearts out,” Hunter explained.

“Ah, well that’s a definite… maybe,” Zane joked. Karaoke with his team was bound to blur boundaries, but also bound to be a great time. What concerned him most was that he hadn’t heard anything about it from Winnie.

“Alright,” Hunter stood up and clapped Zane’s shoulder. “We all hope to see you there. It won’t be the same without you.” He walked out of Zane’s office and closed the door.

Zane fired off a text right away: What’s this about karaoke tonight?

Her response came right back: I only just heard… we’ll finally get to see each other!

Despite how connected they felt on the weekend, they hadn’t been able to sync up their schedules since. And it was already Thursday. They’d spoken on the phone every day, two times for so long that one of them had fallen asleep. Zane didn’t even want to see his screen time report this week, the amount of texting would shoot his percentage to places his phone had never been. They just hadn’t been able to connect in person yet. She’d been at the office until all hours, and DVP were noticing the payoff. They’d tentatively planned a date for Friday night, but he had to admit, the thought of seeing her a day sooner was appealing. I’m in if you are, he sent back.

See you there, came the response a split second after he pressed send on his message.

There was that smile again. The one he hadn’t been able to keep off his face since Saturday. He would get to see Winnie tonight. Just the thought of seeing the fire in her hazel eyes and the adorable dimple in her chin caused his heart to pound a little bit louder.
